Would I get an interpreter if I was in a Spanish speaking Country?

Like many people who are Americans, I wonder why we don’t do like every other country does, have a national language( Which means English). Why should we spend taxpayer funds providing every federal and state form in Spanish? why do we bend over backward to accommodate non English speakers in this way? What is the incentive for them to even learn English. I have had to deal with this issue on a daily basis.
I am a nurse in a large teaching hospital. I have dealt with people who have been in the United States ten to twenty years who do not speak English. What is the incentive to learn the language, when they are so well accommodated? What is more irritating is to go into a store, and the tellers are dealing with the customers, and talking with their co-workers or friends in Spanish.
When you do not learn the language of the country you come to, you are always at a disadvantage. I live in an area with a high Latino population. The burden on our state system as well as the decrease in school test scores, and the increase need for English as a second language takes the money away from an already over burdened budget.
I don’t think the new administration is going to address anything to do with emigration or the flood of illegals into the country. During the seventies the equal rights amendment was brought up for ratification of the constitution. I think we need to start a national petition to require all people to have a valid social security number BEFORE they can get a drivers license, utilize the state or national services, or apply for employment.
I also think the idea that someone can come to the United States illegally, have a child here, and that child is considered a citizen, is unbelievable. Do you know how many infants I have taken care of whose parents were told by doctors in Mexico, and other Latino countries? I can’t count the number. But I have listened to countless parents say they came here so their baby could be born a US citizen. My personal opinion is no child, born to an illegal parent is a legal citizen.
I do believe there should be a way for people to emigrate that is not as restrictive as it is presently. However, No one should be able to come in illegally, and then cut in front of those people who are in line to enter the country legally.
So, lets see if there isn’t a way to start a national petition. Are there any takers out there?

Christmas Is Coming!

dsc03103_edited-11I can hardly believe how fast the time is passing. In less than three weeks it will be Christmas. We don’t have the tree up yet, and only the token candles on the mantel. But this week end, my new 11 year old granddaughter will help me finish the baking, and fudge making, to send my packages out to my children. I have family in Utah, Arizona, California, Oregon, and Florida. Yeah, I know they will get the packages after the holidays, but they will enjoy them.
Three days ago I made my famous Thumb Print Cookies, and cranberry bread. They are waiting in the freezer to be added to the goody packages!
This is the first Christmas with my daughters adopted trio. It is different, going from no children to three. It is also different for the two boys, and their sister as well. They have never had a real Christmas, they have never lived in a home, living in homeless shelters and campers, before protective services finally placed them in foster homes.
It still makes me pause when the seven year old asks if this is real. Do they really get to stay here forever and ever. How do you respond to that kind of comment. “Yes this is real, and this is forever.” Then you get this brilliant smile. this is the best Christmas gift a Grandmother can receive!
So, I will get my Nativity figurines out, I will put up the tree, I will light the candles, and I will have the Christmas carols playing. This is a wonderful time to remember how blessed I am to have the things that I do. So Merry Christmas to all of you. By the way, I put the Thumb Print Cookie Recipe on my recipe site, colleeninthekitchen. Hope you enjoy! Colleen
